I just spent the last 30 minutes of this endlessly rainy, shut-in (but lovely) day visiting my past on myspace. It truly is a time capsule. It made me think about someone I miss a lot. Been thinking of her often this summer when I'm at the beach or on a boat, doing something fun and flippant and carefree. Maybe because I know she'd most likely be sitting next to me if she was still around. Would she have been halfway done with growing out her pixie cut, too? I miss you, Beccs.

...i also had watermelon salad with feta, black olives and onions on megan c's roof.

...i had another weird 'small world' moment. three years ago i did a magazine project with a principal at a school in park slope. when i knew her she was single and looking for a relationship, pretty eagerly. now she's married to my roommate's uncle, and i found that out because of chocolates in my freezer with her face on them.

...captain america is out in theaters, and per my bf, i'll be seeing it this weekend.

...i had chavella's fish tacos for dinner.

...is friday. and i couldn't be happier.

Friday and I Just Got Paid

I realized after reading my friend Megan's blog the other day that it's been a long while since I updated my own. It's hard to believe how much has changed in the past almost-eight months since I became a full-time copywriter. For one, I can't even use Times New Roman without cringing; for another, my weekdays are not my own anymore.

Let me break it down... Monday through Friday I spend nine to 10 hours battling marketing directors trying to keep copy "on brand," writing member notices and letters from general managers, editing endless emails and word documents, mustering up the creativity and google search skills to come up with clever headlines and new ideas and somehow squeezing in a sandwich and maybe a workout.

The evenings are spent shopping away the day's stress or blowing it off with my new addiction: cycling class. Sometimes I'll meet the boyfriend for a meal or down a few glasses of wine with friends before crashing (hard) and waking up at 7am to do it all over.

Don't get me wrong - I love this new life, and I've got a few great things to show for it: a growing portfolio and a couple beautiful pieces of furniture. Health insurance. A tighter ass.

Regardless, I realize I've neglected a few elements of my not-so-distant past - this blog being one of them - but that's not to say that anything, or anyone, is forgotten. And for those reading this, or friends I've missed but haven't talked to in awhile, know that I'm thinking of you now and I do often. And know that the more I change, the more I stay the same and come Friday I'll be following in the footsteps of the women above.

I was chatting with a friend of mine the other night about starting a blog revolving around what women are wearing in the midst of political scandal, specifically siting the wide-brimmed hats all the police offers in Wisconsin were donning while shuffling away protesters.

My friend then informed me of this phenomenon: Gaddafi's harem of all-female, all-virgin bodyguards. Apparently they swear chastity to him, sport high heels and machine guns and keep anyone from sniping the psycho. This shit is too insane to make up.

West Coast Sunshine vs. East Coast Snow Storm

I don't always know why I plan things the way I do. I schedule things too early in the morning or I double book dates with friends or dinner plans or drinks, maybe with the thought that something will usually fall through and I'll have a back-up. Or possibly because I have some ditzy tendencies (ask my boyfriend, he will vouch for that - forgetful much?) and my schedule just slips my mind. Regardless, it usually works out for the best.

My California trip, for example, and my planned start date for work. I would be stressed to the point of ripping my hair out if I was supposed to start my new job today and couldn't get back to New York because of weather delays.

But I booked my flight months ago and for some reason decided to be back in town this Wednesday; and it's supposed to be a sunny day on Wednesday in New York. So I'll keep my fingers crossed that there will be no bumps or unnecessary turbulence on my way back home.

And while I am missing my loved ones back in NYC and I do love a good blizzard; I'm super glad to be with my loved ones here in OC where I just spent the morning walking around in the sunshine with my nephew and my brother. Life is good.

Got the Job!!

New York has done it to me once again, just when I'm on the cusp of giving up and giving in or just being in a perpetual bad mood because I'm training an hour into the city every other day to go on some lame job interview, it goes and scoops me up and gives me the opportunity of a lifetime.

So it seems like I've had about a hundred posts on job hunting, interviewing, and the nightmare of it all. I started to feel like-well, I actually was-a full-time job seeker. I had that shit down to a science - cover letter, resume, copy tests, the works. But I finally, finally found my spot!

I didn't just get the job. I got THE job. I am now a full-time Copywriter for Equinox, a luxury fitness brand and club. I met with the Creative Director yesterday (she was from San Francisco, so that was my shoe-in) and we clicked. Turns out they need someone for copywriting, marketing and they are starting an online magazine - right up my alley! I'm so excited. I get to go home to California now with this amazing, new job in my pocket (that comes with an all access club membership as one of the added perks) and the thought that I'm starting on Monday, January 3rd with a brand new opportunity. So I can truly bring in the New Year right.

Monday Movie Marathon

As I mentioned before, I spent the good part of yesterday watching movies in bed, taking naps and really taking advantage of these days of unemployment - something tells me it won't be too long before I'm back in the rat race. But here are a few of the movies I watched, and would recommend all of them, maybe even in this order. I watched Mississippi Burning last and had some pretty wack dreams last night.

Mississippi Burning. I had a shocked, nearly teary-eyed look on my face pretty much through the whole movie. I couldn't believe the amount of racism and disgusting hatred that took place in the South in the 60s. This was not that long ago, people! I guess I knew that there was a lot of wrong doing and obviously an insane amount of racism, but I'd never watched this movie and it made me sick to my stomach. People can be so ignorant. The South still struggles with a lot of these issues, and it's not even just the south - it's everywhere! But now they keep it more hidden instead of being openly psychotic rednecks. And Gene Hackman and a very young Frances McDormand, amazing performances.

Right America: Feeling Wronged. Speaking of ignorance. This is a documentary by Alexandra Pelosi (Nancy Pelosi's daughter) that covers the last presidential election from the Republican rallies. These are McCain and Palin's people, middle America, the bible belt. It is a really interesting, and slightly nauseating look at right wing Americans and their love for God and Country. I will say that she doesn't seem to interview too many savvy Republicans, or people with intellectual points of view about voting for McCain. But regardless, the people that she captures are very real and very jaded in their opinions - calling Obama a communist, socialist, Nazi and even n-word. It's insane! One guy even admitted he was so backward in his thinking that he didn't even think women should be allowed to vote! Progress!

Big Business. Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin, need I say more? Despite my boyfriend's eye rolling and critique of its ridiculousness (he was actually pretty sweet about it, but I don't know many straight guys who love Bette Midler like I do), I watched an early morning screening of one of my childhood favorites. Hilarious!

Fantastic Mr. Fox. Another one of my choices, of course. But bf liked it too. I do love this flick: Wes Anderson, Bill Murray, Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Jason Schwartzmann. Cool puppeteering and a great soundtrack. How can you go wrong?

I think that's all we watched - we did manage to leave the house a few times to get groceries, buy gloves (its freezing!) and hit up Kings Highway. But this was a seriously dedicated day of watching films.

Starting the Work Week... A Day Late

It might be from the past couple of years working nights and weekends, or more recently from setting my schedule as a freelancer, but most likely from the several years of having to get up and deal with the beginning of the work week; whatever it is I just don't like working on Mondays.

It also has something to do with going out on Sunday night for a birthday dinner and finding it necessary to spend yesterday holed up watching movies. Did I also mention it was a chilly 32 degrees yesterday and it snowed!? So I'm officially starting my work week today and so far it's going pretty well with a paycheck in the mail and two Christmas cards from family. I'm starting to think the future is looking a little brighter - maybe because it's a sunny Tuesday instead of a gray Monday. Guess I'll just have to see how long I can keep this up for.

Design Inspiration... I Want

I spent the good part of the other night scouring design blogs and photographs of cool people's cool homes. It made me pretty envious, and pretty inspired. It's going to take the girls and I awhile to get this place exactly how we want it, but it's really nice to have such a blank canvas to work with, as well. By spring of next year I want my room to be ideal, the kitchen to have hanging plants like the ones in the photo and a giant mirror over our vintage 60s dining room table. (Oh, and backyard access would be nice too!) Just puttin' that out there...

Tragedy On the Block

Yesterday was a weird day. I had to head into the city in the morning and on my way out I saw yellow police tape lining the sidewalk a few apartment buildings up the block. I knew it didn't look good considering there were news vans and cops everywhere, but I didn't have time to be a bottle necker. I got a text from my friend telling me that this woman was murdered by her son, hacked to death with a samurai sword... Some 31-year-old actor from "Ugly Betty" lost it and started chasing his moms around the apartment yelling weird biblical things at her like, "Repent!" So freaky...

The holidays bring out the worst in some people; it's definitely a time when the weak tend to snap. There is kind of an eerie feeling lingering on the block now, Thanksgiving won't ever be the same for that family.

Trying to come up with super witty, original, word-play-y advertising is harder than it looks. I'm working on a project for a potential job and I've thought of some great copy, but some sounds off or not clever enough. It made me think of this ad that has made several appearances in THE ad-man show, Mad Men. It is pretty clever, but I never got what it meant until I looked it up just now.

Apparently "Lemon" was supposed to signify all the bad VW's in the bunch since there was such a rigorous inspection process. You wouldn't notice this bug is flawed, but we did... "We pluck the lemons, you get the plums."

Let's hope I can think up something with equal zest. Keep your fingers crossed.

I had to laugh when I stumbled upon this post on Susannah Breslin's blog (she too is a 6' tall woman, it's a weird world up here sometimes.) The Sequential Crush posted various scans of this comic book from 1973. I really want to get my hands on it, it ain't easy bein' a female giant sometimes. I told Mel afterwards, it's like he depicts love and romance in this realistic light and it's a little frustrating and sad, but also really funny. Anyway, I highly recommend it.

I looked at my phone around midnight last night and realized that it was the anniversary/birthday of a dear friend of mine, Rebecca Ohlson. I haven't been on Myspace in a minute, but I had to go visit her page today. So many memories came flooding back of the times we had together in New York and San Francisco, and I gotta say it hurts to miss someone so much - even if I don't think of it that way as often anymore.

Anyway, this is one amazing photo of her taken by Jay Slack. She was truly one of the most beautiful, photogenic women I've ever known. She would've been 28 today. Old like me.

I miss you so much, but I know you're still watching all of your loved ones and seeing life go on. I'm going to do something fun that we would've done together today. Miss and love. Happy birthday, mama.

I Heart Meatballs

The Meatball Shop in the LES is one of the reasons I quit my job. I saw how ridiculously packed this place was any given night of the week, and located directly around the corner from the empty bar I was waitressing at, and realized there were better things out there. Truly, this is a better thing. The Meatball Shop is super delicious and simple, as food should be. Farm fresh ingredients, great sauces, homemade, scrumptious. You can get them in a bowl with sauce and a little bread, as a smash on a brioche bun, or as sliders. Easy does it. It's always busy, but if you happen to be able to check it out on an off moment, or you don't mind waiting, I'd highly recommend.

I can't help but jump on the media bandwagon here and express a little excitement over the royal wedding proposal by Prince William to Kate Middleton. We all swooned over him when we were kids, he was a dreamboat, not to mention a prince. I personally think Harry is the cuter one in their older age, but maybe that's just because he's still single... Congratulations to the lovely royal fiancees.

I'm in the middle of my monthly copy job for Armani Exchange. I wish I could post images of some of their new clothes on here, but I'm afraid that is against the rules. To give you an idea, picture a black, cotton hoody with the front chest panel covered in black, shiny sequins. And that's just the men's line. I feel like curling up and taking a cat nap.

Speaking of cats, this pic looks exactly like my bf's cat, Chucho. He sleeps just like that, usually right in between us, with his head nearly rounding straight into his butt. He even has the same tiger stripes and long tale. Fat and cute.

I'm interviewing Paul McDonough for the next issue of Working Class (the Outlaw Issue). Marcel and I went to his exhibit last week at the Sasha Wolf gallery and it was pretty amazing. I love photography and his work captures that period in New York that everyone who lives here now (and didn't then) is so curious about. His book New York Photographs: 1968-1978 published by Umbrage represents such a tumultuous time in the city, and documents the high-brow, well suited elite living along side the long-haired hippies, young lovers and Hare Krishnas. As far as I'm concerned, leather jackets are perfect for nearly every outfit. My friend Rachael dressed up as Cher from Mermaids (in the mermaid costume) for Halloween and threw on a leather jacket over it, perfection. It's one thing you can pair just as easily with a sundress as you can with denim and a heavy sweater. I have one leather jacket that is getting nice and worn in from years of use. But I want to get a hot new one for these miserably cold months to come. Anyway, here's a few inspirational faves from around the blogosphere.

Perfect Sunday

It's been a pretty eventful week. I turned 28. Midterm elections. Our first house party. I quit my job at the bar. I set up two pretty amazing interviews for this coming week (eeek, cross your fingers!). I worked my last shift, hopefully ever, as a waitress on Saturday night and said goodbye to my Irish bosses, and then I allowed myself Sunday to chill out and enjoy my newfound freedom. I spent the day goofing around with my boyfriend and his family, watching movies, going to the park, and eating tons of good food. These pictures are of a little project I had going with his niece, so many leaves... I love fall.

Its funny how life works out sometimes, never quite how you expect it. I'm excited for things to come though. And I never want to wait another table for as long as I live, unless its at my own damn party.

Starting Fresh

So those who know me know that I've been working at this pub in the Lower East Side for the past 2+ years. I went from working in marketing and media to serving coffees and waiting tables so that I could focus more energy on Working Class, writing, traveling, hanging out with my friends and sleeping in. It worked out really well, but I realized awhile ago that I needed to do something different. So yesterday I finally did it. I quit! I'm leaving my job at the bar for bigger things. I was terribly scared to make the leap, considering I'm not 100% sure what I'm going to do instead, and because that place has been a pretty big part of my life for awhile. But I feel confident that better things await me. And I'm not totally unemployed, I still have some freelance gigs.

Regardless, I'm excited about this next chapter. Saturday is my official last day of work there, so if you're around come by and have a drink and leave me a tip so I can leave that place on a good note.

Trying to shimmy around with shots and cocktails on a tray while people danced and flailed around with wings, sumo wrestler suits, and giant props on was not fun! Regardless, tonight will kick off my three day+ birthday festivities, and the official celebration of this blessed, creepy holiday. I'll be DJ'ing at Fontana's with Liz and a few other people. I interviewed photographer Cheryl Dunn this morning and she couldn't have been more lovely and inspiring. She has done some amazing things with film and photography, held numerous exhibits and is really etching a name for herself in that boys' club world of street/documentary photography. She was sitting in the airport on her way to South Africa to do some commercial work for Reebok when we spoke, and was very forthcoming about sharing her story. I'll let you know when it's up on the Working Class site.

Dunn is also responsible for filming the doc Backworlds for Words, which includes the skate ballet choreographed by artist/professional skateboarder Mark Gonzales at the Stadtisches Museum in Monchengladbach, Germany in 1999. You'll most likely recognize it from this video, Coconut Records sampled the film for their song "West Coast." Amazing.

every fall season i start watching lots of old scary movies. texas chainsaw massacre, the omen, the exorcist, nightmare on elm street, poltergeist. my childhood best friend loved scary films and we always watched them when we had slumber parties. all the lights out, all the parents had gone to bed, and i was terrified.

they play the shining a lot on amc in honor of halloween, and i absolutely love that movie. it's so creepy and 70s, i always imagine stanley kubrick screaming at shelley duvall until she was rattled into a state of complete fear and insecurity. that's how he wanted her character to be perceived. and jack nicholson is the main event. there's something to be said for a man who can be terrifying and seductively charming at the same time. all work and no play makes jack a dull boy.

Fancy Parisian Flats

No, not shoes. I love this story that was brought to my attention on the blog 2 or 3 things i know. A woman, the granddaughter of Marthe de Florian, abandoned her flat in Paris during WWII and never returned, but she continued to pay rent on it for 70 years. She recently passed and it was found, fully furnished with pieces from the early 20th century. N'est pas la vie belle...

"There was a smell of old dust," said Olivier Choppin-Janvry, who made the discovery. Walking under high wooden ceilings, past an old wood stove and stone sink in the kitchen, he spotted a stuffed ostrich and a Mickey Mouse toy dating from before the war, as well as an exquisite dressing table.

But he said his heart missed a beat when he caught sight of a stunning tableau of a woman in a pink muslin evening dress.

The painting was by Boldini and the subject a beautiful Frenchwoman who turned out to be the artist's former muse and whose granddaughter it was who had left the flat uninhabited for more than half a century.

I read about the release of Yul Brynner: A Photographic Journey on my latest plane ride over the Midwest in Elle Magazine. Brynner's daughter Victoria decided to put together an extensive catalog of the famous actor's photographs. He captures the most intimate moments of well-known celebrities, a classy tribute to documenting the rich and famous long before the days of Us Weekly. Imagine growing up with a mother who considered her inner circle to be Elizabeth Taylor ("She always took forever to get ready.") Audrey Hepburn, Richard Brooks and Mia Farrow? It was just another day in the life for Victoria Brynner: summers in Switzerland, lounging poolside with the glitterati in Beverly Hills, and adopting the ultimate fashion and style tips, no doubt.

I love the part where she talks about the code of dressing for women of that time, and who better to get fashion advice from than Mom's gal pals? "This code meant mainly Balenciaga or Valentino, along with Balenciaga gloves ("always cream or white"), made to measure Roger Vivier shoes, Cartier bags and on more laid-back days, capri pants ("bought at a place in Beverly Hills called Jack's") worn with ballet flats ("ballerinas") and "little tops." Everything was just impeccable."

Home Sweet Home

Tom's Diner. They give you oranges and cookies and coffee while you wait in line for a table.

We managed to get all moved in, well mostly, to our new place last weekend. And so far sooo amazing. I'm absolutely loving it here. The neighborhood is perfect - around the corner from the Brooklyn Museum, the library and Prospect Park. Our place is gorgeous, brand new floors, appliances, but still that pre-war, old building feel. And my housemates are total dolls. It already feels like home.

We spent the weekend exploring the neighborhood a bit. Our new landlord took us out to dinner at Chavella's (yes, our new landlord - he is not your conventional landlord, and nothing like my last one!), and some friends came to check out the new digs so we had breakfast at Tom's Diner on Washington. I also treated myself to a flat white at Glass Shop, a cafe around the corner with a patio, wi-fi and Aussie coffee, and some beers at Franklin Park, our closest beer garden.

And true to our character (California girls) we already have our first visitor coming tomorrow.

Super happy to finally feel at home here. I guess it's good I didn't hightail it back to Cali just yet. I'll have some pics of the maxi pad up soon. The camera is buried god only knows where.

A Blog Hiatus and A Sick New Video

So not like anyone was up all night worrying, but I have taken a small hiatus from updating my Leggy blog. I've just been totally burned - on job hunting and writing and moving and dealing with annoying landlords and watching friends go through good and bad changes and attending my grandmother's funeral and seeing my family go through these ridiculously tough economic times. It's hard. But I don't want to stop moving forward, and despite the fact that I'm reaching a breaking point with job seeker rejection - I don't want to give up on that either. I'm moving into a new place tomorrow and I have a new flame and I found $100 on the floor of my cab last night. So what the hell, maybe my luck is changing.

Whatever it is, I'm going to ride this wave as long as I can until it throws my ass into the reef.

A Beautiful Day

Just another ridiculously beautiful day in New York City. I wandered around Manhattan for a few hours. Did a little thrifting, had a macchiato, walked in circles around Union Square and up the avenues. This really is my favorite time of year. And even though I'm broke at the moment (it's all for a good cause, my new apartment, yay!) I can appreciate walking around the city and feeling fall. It's too good...

There's no denying it. Fashion Week in New York. More models than usual roam the streets, and everyone is out in their Sunday best. I love these images and clothes from the collections. As usual, the fashion world comes full circle and re-visits the decades past, ones we all kind of wish we were living in now. Here we can see that the 1970s, with all their disco-inspired, luxurious lounging, cocaine thin, feminine, floral, colorful indulgence are back for Spring.

So everything is riding on today. The whole world. My whole world. Okay, not to be so dramatic, but I'm waiting to hear back from a potential new job and we're also going to look at a new apartment tonight that I'm 95% sure we're going to want, and apparently two other parties want it, too. So we're hoping he gives it to us! Why does everything have to be so damn competitive in this city!!??

Anyway, please send positive energy and wishes my way today because I need some peace and happiness in my life. I guess it will work out how it's supposed to, but I sort of hate that expression when it applies to me not getting my way.
